The purpose of this course is to provide attendees with an overview of how and why a geotechnical subsurface exploration program is performed. Because test borings are the most common method of subsurface exploration, test borings will be discussed in detail, including the types of drilling and sampling equipment that are commonly used to conduct test borings. How to select the quantity, depth and location of test borings for a project will also be discussed. Specialized field testing will be covered, including pressuremeter testing, vane-shear testing, cone penetrometer testing, and flat-plat dilatometer testing. Information regarding groundwater observation wells will also be included.
